Movie DVD and mpeg on SuSE Linux 10.1 x86_64
I understand your frustration - years ago when SuSE stopped to include the full package for license reasons I had the same headache for a short while. Now all works fine. unfortunately I did NOT write down the exact list of action that solved my video problems - but I have libxine1 installed and w32codec ( packman ) and libdvdcss2 ( packman )
may be the following howto from Linuxquestions.org will help you best:

Learning Linux
I did all self-study, I had NO time to learn, I had instantly to work and produce results - 10 years ago there was no alternate solution to self study. I one day course for some 120+ $ that promised to teach all for a running system ended with many hours overtime and nothing working at all - hence I studied the SuSE manual as well as using online resources - Google was and still is my best friend in solving problems. After many years the problems shrink tiny to non-existent. Once you have it running - never change a running system unless you truly NEED the features of an updated version. SuSE is progressing fast and everything always gets easier. always use the newest versions !
Even nowadays if a problem occurs - Google usually is the fastest way to a solution ... just remember to search for howto and NOT for "how to" when looking for a solution howto fix a problem!
Good luck
