Google sitemaps usefulness or uselessness and SSH server access
1. there is no benefit in having a Google sitemap - I have repeatedly tested Google bot-behavior and found zero benefit in this additional work, hence i have long stopped to waste my time for such gadgets.
for micro sites of a few dozen or few hundred pages there is even less benefit.
2. in addition to the regular sitemap Google also accepts RSS feed instead if defined so in robots.txt. this is a new convention adopted by several major SE.
3. 1and1.com has SSH access - hence the traditional way to do all kinds of stuff on your server is by connecting to your server via SSH. if your local machine is a Linux machine then this procedure is straight forward and simple.
SSH connection is started in your local bash
SSH username @ yourdomain.com
you will then be prompted for password.
you may use IP instead of domain name
and you will want to learn server key access instead of password
4. to have a web site never is for beginners. it is a means to grow toward earning money and hence requires serious study and efforts such as any expert job.
before investing $, time and efforts make a clear decision if you need a web site for earning money or doing business - if YES - then take your time to learn all from scratch.
typically a SuSE Linux DVD set contains all eBooks, manual, howtos, man pages and docs you need to learn whatever you want to learn.
5. final question
preferred method of dealing with G sitemaps is to avoid wasting time until year later when G sitemaps bring some real benefit. as of now it takes G about 2-4 days to have new pages indexed without sitemaps and much longer with sitemaps.
there are more useful ways to spend your time than G sitemaps.
same applies for Y sitemaps!
on active sites - such as the cyberspace ashram - Googlebot visits my site about 30'000 times each month - enough to re-index every page a few times per months. enough to stay current.
God bless
