New openSUSE Linux server in action for Cyberspace Ashram - after extreme Christmas traffic and a fully overloaded server during holy night hours, the new server is up and running as of last night
New openSUSE Linux LAMP server in action as of the night 25/26 December 2008
There was an open question I had - how much traffic does it take to crash my Cyberspace Ashram server. I knew that I wanted to know real facts rather than theories. I also wanted to know the stability of server before moving to new server. Expansion is necessary to grow, but expansion needs to be based on real life facts rather than on salespersons skills to sell.
Slow ISP - facts and numbers experienced multiple times during past many weeks

Comclark Angeles - ISP download speed November 29 2008
The 2 new servers have been nearly ready for a few weeks, extreme ISP downtimes and extreme slow lines made it impossible to work in a professional way. Hence I hesitated until pushed. The holy night brought such HUGE traffic, more than ever before - by far. Hence for a period of about 4 or more hours there was repeated time out and thousands of visitors had excessive page loading times or even timeout. The first time in my life I had a little prayer to God - let them a little away from computers, may be some loving within family, or so.
The server never crashed - the server worked tirelessly, but fully loaded and overloaded for hours. For several hours my CPU was again and again on 100% and load of 1,5 or more was average. See below screenshot from top:

Holy night traffic - server load
The new server - currently actually the old plus the new combined. New server has dual x86_64 CPU, 4GB RAM, dual drive. Content now is distributed on both drives and the old server still handles part of the global traffic as well.
Later the 3rd server will be joining the existing setup and all traffic is handled by the full team setup of 3 servers. As soon as both new servers are fully working and in use, the old server may be replaced by a new hardware to get the full setup new. Hence the final setup vs the old setup will be:
Old Cyberspace Ashram server until holy night 2008:
- 1 AMD x86_64 CPU
- 2 GB RAM
- 1 drive in use for content serving
- one drive for backup
New Cyberspace Ashram server setup will be
- 3x 2 AMD x86_64
- 3x 4GB RAM
- Hence a total of 6 drives, all in use for real work
- each drive also serves as backup for other servers
- one of the 3 servers will act as security and communication server for NS, database and other security related features
- 2 nameservers masters will be running - as of now, plus 2 remote slave nameservers - 1 in California and another one in Florida.
My Cyberspace Ashram "office" working environment
To give you a little idea on how I live and work. Below a cellphone picture of my current "office". One room = bedroom = living room = office - all in one. That'sŝwhat I prefer and love since years. I made on purpose a second shot for above photo, showing my open wardrobe. Why open? I am a man - hence NO need for 20, 40 or more dresses like some girls. Decades ago I once had a dancing partner, she was single and had 2 large wardrobes side by side - that's about 4-5 meters of wardrobe, may be far in excess of 60 dresses - 2 large family size wardrobes FULL from left to right for one single girl ....

Cyberspace Ashram - my office living bedroom
As a single man - I do handwash, of course daily, since many years. Since I often travel or live/work in hotels, resorts or cottages, I do handwash and hang my daily laundry into my (open) wardrobe, then direct the fan toward the wet laundry and some 2-4 hours later all is clean and dry. When in provincial areas, I do sun-drying of course - it smells better and is even greener without fan - just sunlight and natural wind! Most or all hotel rooms have the typical fan commonly used in most tropical hotel rooms. That is my green way and contribution to energy saving. Daily clean up, daily laundry alway hand wash.
Soon is payback time - time to share some of the server configuration and server move experiences to allow others easier work. Meanwhile you may wait for some more "spiritual food" for your heart and soul, be reminded that you have already thousands of pages to read and practice ... and you may also want to share my Digg - love team and help to promote solutions of love among all global Internet community.
