Internet in Cambodia - Internet connectivity, Internet cafes, 3G and wifi in Cambodia

Internet in Cambodia is slow and for local hotels ISP are expensive. Most places I have been and used wifi these past weeks had a 128 or 256 Kbps line for all hotel. Remember where you are and you learn to live with it. Cambodia has abundance of other values FAR above high speed DSL or high tech stuff to offer. Human values like care for others or deepest humbleness ....

Most hotels in middle class range - i.e. US$ 20-30 per day do have FREE wifi in the rooms. All hotels and guest houses below 20 US$ per day you may expect to have to use a nearby Internet cafe. Internet cafe are abundant even in provincial cities such as Siem Reap or Kompong Som. Hence you can do all your eMailing, CD copy or burning / printing etc all over the country in Cambodia.

Mobile connectivity including / using 3G is available but on a kB basis. No flat rates. The one mobile provider that is one of the several roaming partners I use these weeks is Camshin. From North to South of country, even far away from cities in jungle or mountains, I always had strong or max signal with Camshin. Including 3G signal everywhere so far. Hence if mobile Internet connectivity is vital, you may be able to try Camshin with your 3G enabled cellphone. All 3G connections are kB based !! Hence the dollar flows as you communicate.

Internet cafes usually charge 0.5 - 1 US$ per hour and can be found all over the country.

If you need fast connection for server admin and server maintenance, there is NO WAY to do so from Cambodia! Unless you find a new lucky provider to offer you 512 or faster, all I have experienced so far is just good enough for basic web site publishing and eMail. Nothing more at all. You may try to get your own Internet satellite connection. There are provider offering satelite Internet. Just look and try or ask around to see how others have been doing with Satellite Internet.

As a conclusion: If you are a web publisher and have your own server, better make sure you have all server security tight and strict, avoid fancy stuff and member sites to keep your Internet work simple and clean and have peace of mind to enjoy your vacation or work here in Cambodia.
