On September 18th, 2006 around 0230 AM - just a day before my previous departure from Angeles to Boracay - a group of about 8 male individuals wearing police jackets and caps armed with M-16 (Baby Armalite) made a holdup in a reputable Hotel in Angeles City.
Some 15 persons - mostly hotel guests - have been locked into a room by the robbers and depleted of their property such as cellphones, money, computer laptop, jewelry. credit card, hotel cash box, etc.
Which hotel is unimportant - its the one I usually and currently stay with excellent Internet connection and I will of course continue to stay here. Such hold up could happen any other hotel, any other city, any other island - even Boracay island where I have been told days ago that hold ups have occurred this summer time as well.
The robbers fled by a black car looking like a Pajero with the numbers 519 - letters unrecognized. It appears that the same group has made another hold up just in very recent days in Manila.
Security in the Philippines is different from security in Europe and life here certainly is nothing for bored European city people. Hold ups or even kidnaping are tradition here in the Philippines. Mentality is hot and emotional at times - Millions are poor and many are suppressed by richer ones. Politics is only for the richest ones. Rich get richer - poor get poorer.
The risk to get killed in Europe by chemical toxins, by a speeding car, cancer or severe illness or accidents most likely is far greater than to experience a hold up here in a tropical paradise.
