Read arrival at El Nido airport, El Nido nature neighborhood or the complete Philippine Travel Guide for more information
El Nido is a small village - may be thousand or so people living here. All photos from village are within easy walking distance. May be one kms from northern end of village near bus terminal until southern end of village near the beach south of El Nido.
Hence El Nido is an ideal place for nature lovers wishing to walk or go jogging. No sport facilities - but plenty of clean, green tropical nature.
Accommodation is mostly in small family cottages along the beach. Most in the village - some outside of the small village. Prices may range from 10 - 20 US$ simple housing and much higher for aircon housing. the "resorts" on the islands off El Nido are in the range of 200 US$ per day UP !!
El Nido has 12 hrs electricity every day and 12 hours NO electricity each day. Power is ON from 3 PM till 3 AM. Nothing more and nothing less. Did I miss electricity ?? Absolutely NO !!! Power switches on pretty accurately - may be plus/minus half an hour accuracy.
Accordingly - TV, Internet and all related facility are down during power-OFF times from 3AM till 3 PM.
Several small Internet cafes are available for your regular eMail or laptop use. Many Internet cafes however close around 9 PM. Bandwidth is acceptable - the local provider for all village is smartbro - with maximum of 378Kbps per Internet cafe - shared among all users.
Dozens of local boats are available to take you on half day or full day trips to the nearby islands. Islands typically are surrounded by crystal clear blue water and many islands have beautiful small white beaches. Some trips offer a drop and pick up to and from a beach of your choice for a full day all on your own.
Boat trips are available for groups - but also for individual persons wishing to enjoy paradise in peace. Prices are far too low - and hence it is recommended you give a honest and generous tipping - may be 10-20 US$ for a full day trip to make sure all boat-captain family has a pleasant life as well besides your own pleasure of being welcome guest in paradise.
Several small restaurants offer food from breakfast till dinner and most restaurants close around 10 PM. Food is OK - but very far from gourmet food. All the different nicer looking restaurants I tried had far below average food when compared to international standards. But service is friendly and smiling. You may get a decent diner for 10 US$.
Hence if good food is important to you - El Nido definitely is the wrong place for you!
For all normal local transportation - use a trike - El Nido trikes are comfortable but have seats usually for 2 passengers only. Be generous with your fare and you'll have a smiling and happy free tour-guide at the same time.
You can go on extensive walks into El Nido green, lush tropical neighborhood - or take a trike a few kms outside to start your walk from there. Early during dry season you may also visit the nearby waterfalls. About 10 kms north of El Nido by trike and from their some 30 minutes walking. The only way to find the waterfalls is to use a guide. Best is to hire your trike driver as a full time guide for the entire trip that might take about 2-3 hrs.
As you have seen on my pictures - later in dry season the waterfalls are dry - the river has no longer flowing water - but the nature toward the waterfalls still is beautiful and exciting. Take some drinking water along - it's hot - and during waterfall season you also should have your swim suit along for a swim in the jungle !
Let the following pictures do all the talking - a photo can show more than thousand words. All these photos have been taken during my last visit in El Nido between May 20 and 27 2007 during the final days of a many months lasting dry season.
