Underlaying dry straw or grass to protect strawberries from fouling. Strawberries are easily fouling when nearing the dark red ripe stage. A rainy day wet soil from irrigation may cause strawberries to foul. Hence there is a need to keep the fruits away from soil, either with a layer of clean low grass or straw as practiced here in this photo.
As long as the strawberry is green or partially green, the fruits easily survives rain or wet condition. In the final 2-3 days before harvest however the strawberry turns into a a very fragile fruit.
The dark red ones are ready for harvest NOW, the other one with the greenish tip still needs another 2-3 days.
Strawberry fields need to be harvested every day during harvest season. One single day too late may either surrender a ripe fruit to snails or fouling.
