Portulaca loves plain tropical sun - tropical sun means real tropics - hence between 23.5 degrees North and 23.5 degrees South of equator. Portulaca flowers grow in meager sandy soil and blossom each day during plain hot sunny hours. Because of Portulaca flowers preference to hot plain sun without any shadows, the sun plan grows abundant on sidewalks, around houses with stoney, gravelly or sandy soil. The more sun and the hotter the sun the happier the sun plant. As soon as sun becomes weak later in the afternoon - the blossoms close until after sunrise next day.
A single sun plant such as the yellow Portulaca here in the image grows fast and soon may develop many branches and may have up to 2 or more dozen blossoms per plant.
