This white mini-lotus was almost haunting me since days. The mini-lotus ( may be a dwarf lotus ) is so tiny and cute yet most difficult to photograph. Today however was my lucky day in a lotus pond area far from my place. The price for the dwarf-lotus photos: A whole bunch of leeches on my legs! Nothing serious, but now I know that we have many different types of different leeches in Cambodia! Different colors and different sizes.

The size of the small lotus blossom is about as wide as my thumb! The anatomy and physiology of this lotus is different from other lotus seen so far and later I may elaborate more in details.

While the water looks dirty, it is brown from clean natural mud - an environment free of major chemical pollution or industrial pollution. We luckily have NO industry within long distance from here. What a blessing to be living in true nature!
The lotus pond here is surrounded by rice fields and other ponds with a variety of aquatic life, aquatic flowers and plants, fish, and lots of leeches of different kind.

Unique to this Cambodian dwarf lotus is the one mother plant brining up a long stem from the bottom of the pond. From each long stem originating from the mother plant - a small group of lotus leaves and several lotus flowers result in a small floating array. Once such a group of floating lotus leaves/flowers is completed, the dwarf lotus creates a runner some 50-100 cm long and then creates another floating array of leaves and lotus blossoms.
If you know the strawberry plant-runners, the dwarf lotus look very much the same. Hence most of these lotus leaves have NO direct connection to the mother plant or to the soil at the bottom of the pond, but only thru the runner with the previous lotus flower group floating at the water surface. An interesting anatomy / physiology of a lotus plant.
On the image you clearly see several long and stronger runners from group to group with small arrays of lotus leaves and lotus blossoms in each such lotus array.
Each such mini-arrangement has several leaves around the center and several blossoms. Typically a few blossoms are open at a time. Many tiny small lotus buds ready to blossom.

Beauty needs no minimum size, beauty comes from within and is in the detail - just as in humans. And just as in human life, it appears that some of the most beautiful creatures arise in some of the dirtiest environments. Hence beauty appears to be inversely proportional to the environment a creature grows. Same in human life on earth: The more difficult a social environment, the more beautiful a soul may become when fully matured by the end of a spiritual learning cycle on earth.

Lotus seeds are delicious. The size of a lotus seed is approximately the same as the size of an Acorn. The taste of a fresh and fully ripe lotus seed is somehow comparable to fresh - i.e. un-dried - hazelnuts. Lotus seeds are commonly eaten in Cambodia. Another part of the lotus flower used as food resource are lotus flower stems before they rich the water surface, hence before the lotus buds start to grow. The lotus leaves sometimes are used to wrap food. The common use of lotus parts as widely spread and most valuable food resource is the reason why in Cambodia so many large lotus ponds and lotus fields are maintained. Low maintenance / NO maintenance but a rich source of healthy food. In addition the lotus ponds accommodate a variety of other edible aquatic life such as fish, frogs, edible snails and much more.
At this point the life cycle of a lotus flower ends, new buds grow, open and blossom in full God made beauty for the joy and wellbeing of mankind.

When common language differs from scientific language, then I prefer common people's language.

Some of the lotus photos shown are well defined lotus flowers, while others may also be called water lilies by some, specially by scientists.

In the peopleŝmind and heart often all are lotus flowers. However there is a small difference. As a general rule those lotus flowers having seeds / fruits are quiet generally agreed to be lotus. Those without the seeds are often also called water lilies. From a spiritual point of view there is far less difference between the spiritual nature of both. Hence I may call water lilies also lotus.

The lotus bears fruits - nut like and delicious, but has far less nectar. In exchange for missing fruits the water lily has a daily high volume of sweetest nectar.

How confusing the naming policy of lotus / water lily is may be seen across the www and seen on examples such as image captions like "Lotus Flower In Lilly Pond" so what is it a lotus flower in lotus pond or a lily in lily pond ...

I love a and use to call both lotus!

But to satisfy both searches and both naming-"fans" - the one searching for lotus, meaning lotus and the one searching for lotus but meaning "water lily" I may name it for all searchers of this beautiful exotic and blossoming water plant.

Just a day or two after several cloudy and rainy days is the best time to find beautiful fresh looking lotus blossoms.
I am still on the hunt for the perfect lotus flower picture in pink and white. I love my Carl Zeiss lenses for their excellent job on my Sony A900. A perfect lotus flower photo requires a perfect weather, perfect green natural background or blue sky background combined with a perfect looking lotus blossom.
In windy days the blossoms all are out of shape - just like the hair style of a pretty woman. If too long hot and sunny, then many of the surrounding background leaves turn brown. If blossom too old, then too many insect traces. Many insects love flowers and eat little by little ...
No problem for mother nature, no reason to use any chemicals, it looks natural to me when flowers share a little for other living beings of mother nature. But for a perfect lotus shot I prefer to have a clean virgin lotus flower.
