Mayon, one of the country's 22 active volcanos in the Philippine islands and is one of the most active volcano in the Philippines. Since 1616 until todate, Mayon has erupted 48 times including last year's - 14 July 2006 - eruption. The beautifully symmetrical Mayon volcano rises to some 2460 meters. Height varies in different sources - of course - each volcanic activity changes the height somewhat.

The volcano has a few periods of up to 20+ years of silence - but Mayon volcano often has periods of frequent almost annual volcanic activities - from 2000 till todate 7 activity periods. Hence Mt. Mayon volcano certainly is a live volcano and had repeatedly disastrous eruptions with numerous casualties and destruction of larger areas due to lava flow, lahar, ashes, etc. with up to 17 km high eruption column. The most fatal eruption was on February 1, 1814 and buried the entire town of Cagsawa - see the photo album from the Cagsawa ruins for more details.

Very nearby this lahar river bed on the black sand beach of the Pacific ocean coast is a huge construction project for beach front properties .. the project appears nearly empty - no wonder ! Who wants to invest excessive prices in beach front property if the Volcano in your backyard may leave you with all your dreams and mortgages buried under ashes and lava any time.

It's 7:48 AM and that is about the latest I have experienced until all clouds cover Mayon volcano during my 10 days photo sessions around Mt Mayon volcano and its neighborhood of Albay province.
On fullmoon nights Mt Mayon easily can be recognized naked all night long - just like Filipina girls - Mayon only is naked in night time - as soon as daylight shows, the active volcano hides within an hour or two behind dense clouds all day long.

With approximately 2460 meters height - Mt Mayon is more than 1000 meters higher than about anything else around in this province. Hence the Volcano serves as a navigational aid up to dozens of kms away.Mt Mayon with its 2460 meters / 8070 ft height is among the highest 30 mountains in the Philippines - around position 21+ but seldom shows up in highest mountain list of the country ... may be because of its regular activities and hence changing height it is impossible to give a precise height and thus a precise rank among the highest peaks of the Philippine islands.
