There are many sites offering simple tools or graphics, java, JavaScript, we go beyond such very basic tools - these simple accessories or perl scripts you find yourself using major search engines.

I have found and used some sites, services and tools and help that really and very substantially improved the overall quality in regard to search engine optimization and increased quality resulting in measurably more hits per months !

Quality control requires measurable feedback by various tools.

Top positioning in search engines requires top quality sites - quality is based on knowledge and facts - because that is what search engines gather from YOUR site - FACTS - data that need to be presented in a precise form to give you a honest ranking of your site among the millions of other sites.

1. access.pl - also called whoisonline - a perl script for easy access control in real time. Configure the number of lines from your access_log you want to see - and the script groups them nicely by IP - for instant and frequent verification about who is online - what pages they visit - from where they come. But also to monitor possible attacks by hackers and to see real time access server responses and errors. To be used in a browser - easy setup in just a minute or two ! in case you can NOT find the original for download - here a free whoisonline download - the Whoisonline file is the newest version that allows some adaptation to various access_log-file formats - myself I use the original access.pl version you also find here for download !

   A sample output of access.pl from my own daily use can be seen here - the output is exactly the same as for standard Apache access_log file.
   whoisonline / access.pl is one of my most frequently used SEO quality tools and most valuable for direct personal quality control.
3. slipwire-1.4 did you ever have the feeling that some of your online files may be damaged or hacked ? Or you may just want to sleep well AFTER the next crash and restore of all your online files. slipwire-1.4 a simple perl script lets you create a file list controlled data base of filenames and their SHA1 hashes. In a few seconds you create your initial db for 3000+ files and then any time after you verify all files again in a few seconds. You may do this by cron job and email it to you. Any file being changed in any way is clearly identified and listed on your output. Simple install in just a few minutes.

Search engine optimization

Google certainly is the number one of all search engines these days - however a clean search engine optimization gives you excellent results in any search engine. Different search engines use different methods to deal with searches as well as with data submitted by site owners.

From a few fixed keywords and stingy short description to a full page search - any method can be found.

Clean web design includes

• alt text for all pictures and graphics
• meta tags for description and keywords - always relevant for the particular page
• title tag in the header of each page equal to the first main title of the text
• relevant titles and subtitles in the text
• file names and folder names with relevant names related to text of that page or topic of your web site
• each page should have individual meta tags in the head section - avoid copy and paste all head section with same content for all pages to save time - you lose positions and traffic !!!
• Of course you create clean HTML code and have it validated by w3c
• and you may validate CSS style sheets as well by w3c

Link check

1. if your site is small - then you go to w3c and check your links online - a matter of a few minutes maximum.
2. if you are using Linux, then most likely also Quanta Plus as web design tool with its integrated Plugins for link check. Check your links - internal links as well as outgoing links regularly. Quanta Plus link checker allows several levels deep link validation, thus if needed your entire site, offline and online!

search engine positioning and increasing traffic

• if you want to know how often a particular keyword is used / entered in search engines - www.wordtracker.com gives you online and by email a full insight about the popularity of particular keywords. May allow you to author / edit texts using such results to increase the number of potential visitors on your site by selecting and using words that are actually used by people searching / surfing the web !
